VOLUNTEER COMPANION
A volunteer companion will receive guidance from the person supported, their support staff and the supervisor of that location.
The role of a volunteer companion includes:
- Responsible for assisting people who have a developmental disability to participate in recreational, leisure or social activities
- Responsible for promoting independence, individualism and community involvement
The outcome of your involvement is to support people living in the community so that they have an opportunity to meet new people, expand their community connections and hopefully develop friendships.
This will benefit the people we support by:
- Providing an opportunity to explore their interests and develop a natural network of support.
- Volunteers gain a sense of satisfaction for having assisted someone and improving their quality of life.
It is important that a Volunteer Companion bring with them:
- Compassion and respect for people who have a developmental disability
- A willingness to take the initiative for activities and outings
- Being responsible and following through with commitments that have been agreed to
- An ability to be outgoing and friendly
- Being a good role model
We will provide for you the following:
- Introduction to person to be supported
- Orientation provided by Community Living Brant staff and the person to be supported
